Hajime Karasuyama, Tokyo Medical and Dental University School of Medicine, Japan
Stephen Galli

Dr. Karasuyama is the Executive Director and Executive Vice-president of Tokyo Medical and Dental University, and chairs the Department of Immune Regulation at Graduate School of Medical and Dental Sciences. He was a scientific member of the Basel Institute for Immunology in Switzerland, twice, in 1984-1987 and 1990-1995. The aim of his laboratory is to elucidate the genetic, molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying immunological disorders such as allergy and immunodeficiency. He is particularly interested in the physiological and pathological role of basophils, a long-neglected but evolutionally-conserved minority in the immune system, and has identified their non-redundant functions in protective immunity and allergic responses.
